"I had an enormous teddy bear my father had bought for me the Christmas before we went away. It was almost as tall as I was. I loved it and I used to play with it on deck with my father, and the Captain stopped several times and commented on my teddy bear and spoke with my father, who was delighted with him. I wanted to go back for my teddy bear when my father was carrying me out of the cabin to take me to the boat deck. I remember saying, 'I want my teddy bear.' He didn't say anything; he just continued to carry me. I never had another teddy bear........I never wanted one."
